Lonavala
Lonavala a favourite attraction for the Mumbaikars attains its zenith during the rainy season, when the other hill stations in Maharashtra are abandoned. Lonavala is at its best during the monsoon season as the whole countryside turns green, lakes and ponds brimming with water, myriad waterfalls gushing down ravines, mists enveloping the valley. it`s a heavenly out there.
Shillong
Shillong which receives heavy downpour during the monsoons is full of life. Though the rains here last longer than the other parts of India , but it is the time when Shillong is at is cleanest best. Cascading waterfalls, cheerful women, low lying clouds, soothing winds and lush green forests greet you. Cherrapunji, once the wettest place on Earth is some 37 km ahead of Shillong is also worth a visit.
Shoja
Just 69 kilometers from Kullu and 5 km from the Jalori Pass lies the breathtakingly beautiful yet undiscovered Shoja in Himachal Pradesh. It`s a great place to chase away the monsoon blues. Unending slopes of emerald forests, thickly wooded mountainside, snow-clad Himalayan ranges in the distant horizon- nature is at its best in this small hamlet located in the Seraj valley. Enjoy the walks here in the forests and meadows, just after a fresh drizzle.
Goa
One must land up in Goa in monsoons to see the wondrous workings of nature. With the Arabian Sea coastline on its west and the scenic Western Ghats on its east entire Goa becomes resplendent with a divine beauty. Though the Sea gets turbulent with unabated rain but the lashing of strong winds and high waves is a rare experience. A great attraction is the Dudhsagar Falls on the Goa-Karnataka border. A train journey( Vasco Da Gama- Londa) is also worth.
Jog Falls
A destination which is the star of the monsoons is the Jog Falls in the Shimoga district of Karnataka. 400 kms from Bangalore it is India`s highest waterfall. The falls which are at their majestic best between July and October plunges into the valley from a height of 1000 feet. The whole vicinity of the falls is a spectacular sight with deep valleys, rolling hills and rainbows briming in the horizon every now and then.
Coorg
If you are an adventure freak then Coorg in the rains, is tailor made for you. The monsoons here stretch for a considerably longer period. It gets its full quota of rainfall from southwest monsoon and Northeast monsoon. The weather is cold and the sight of the hills and valleys drenched and draped in mist, lush green vegetation, swollen streams, gushing rivers and cascading waterfalls are too much of a temptation.
Thiruvananthapuram
Trivandrum, the capital of Kerala is a great place to visit during the monsoons. Most of the hotels dish out discounted rates during this time. From the beach side hotels you can enjoy the constant downpour as the Sea is too rough for a swim. There are many things to enjoy. Thunderstorms rolling in from the ocean and then colliding against the mighty Aghastya Hills (western ghats)-just around 40kms from Trivandrum or the picturesque sight of swollen rivers speeding into the sea.
